About this selection...

With sultry summer days a distant memory, it's time to enliven the senses and keep hibernation away. The selection we are offering will do just that, awakening your sight, smell and definitely your palate.

We want to celebrate autumn and everything that makes it special, with its exuberant colours, its warm-glow days, that fresh nip in the air... and, of course, all that Nature has to offer at this time: the assorted smells of mushrooms, truffles, pumpkins, chestnuts, succulent roasts... Good food just needs a good wine to set if off and make dishes even tastier. Smooth and structured whites, elegant and powerful reds.

We have selected three great wines that have gained considerable recognition among wine critics and specialist writers. Three wines which reveal all their fullness during the autumn months, accompanying dishes they pair up with perfectly: pumpkin-filled raviolis, wild mushroom risotto, meat stews, soups... It's time to light the fire and uncork a bottle for enjoying, in the excellent company of fine food. There's no better way to thank Mother Nature for such precious gifts... To your very good health!

Umani Ronchi Plenio 2009 (2 bottles)

White. Umani Ronchi Castelli di Jesi Verdicchio, Italy Verdicchio

Bottle: £10.17 club members / £11.54 non-members

Plenio is the most representative, award-winning wine from the Umani Ronchi winery, made using grapes from a unique vineyard of 9 hectares lying close to the town of Cupramontana. The Verdicchio, a difficult grape which prefers mountainous and breezy regions, has encountered on these gentle slopes in the Marche district an ideal habitat, enabling it to express itself perfectly in full, complex and well-structured white wines.

Plenio falls into this general description and exhibits fine aromas of ripe tropical fruits, mint and aniseed. On the palate it appears enveloping, with a most pleasurable sensation that combines powerfulness and smoothness. Its sweet aromas of honey and ripe fruit, the grape's typical almond hints, and a flavoursome minerality are comprised in an exquisite mouthful with a very long finish.

In order to enjoy it in all its fullness, it is advisable not to serve it too chilled (between 10 and 12 degrees). Ideal for accompanying white meats, mushrooms and stuffed pasta dishes.

  • Alcohol content: 14,0%
  • Optimum serving temperature: Between 10ºC and 12ºC

Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2009 (2 bottles)

Red. Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco, Italy Nebbiolo

Bottle: £16.04 club members / £18.22 non-members

There's nothing better than autumn for appreciating all the splendour of the Langhe: the bronze, red and gold hues of its vineyards, its wild mushrooms, white truffles, chestnuts... Now's the time for Nature to bring forth its most highly prized fruits and for wineries to exude the smell of must which in a few months' time will become the marvellous wines we all know and love.

After this introduction, it seems only right for us to include a Langhe wine in such an autumnal selection. A flavoursome and at the same time refined wine, ideal as an accompaniment for the delicious local gastronomy.

For our November selection we have decided upon the highly regarded Produttori del Barbaresco winery, to offer you its traditional Barbaresco. Made from completely ripe grapes which are harvested by hand during the first fortnight of October, their juice is fermented in steel tanks for a month before then ageing for two years in oak barrels.

A bright garnet red colour, very typical of the Nebbiolo variety, it displays on the nose all its elegance and personality, with notes of red fruits, spices and rose petals. On the palate, this is a wine that presents some marked tannins, but it is flavoursome and balanced in a most refined way. You can choose to drink it in a couple of years' time or enjoy it right now, paired up with truffle dishes and risottos.

Wild mushroom risotto

  • Alcohol content: 14,5%
  • Optimum serving temperature: Between 16ºC and 18ºC
  • Drink now or keep until 2022.

Sedilesu Mamuthone 2011 (2 bottles)

Red. Giuseppe Sedilesu Cannonau di Sardegna, Italy Cannonau

Bottle: £10.54 club members / £11.97 non-members

The 100,000 or so bottles produced by the Sedilesu family arise from the heart of Cerdeña, in the district of Barbagia di Ollolai, where the winery owns its vineyards that lie on granite soils, which are ideal for one of the region's most deeply-entrenched grape varieties: the Cannonau. The Sedilesu family's work steadfastly upholds tradition and the respect they feel for nature. Their harvests are carried out manually and, after a meticulous selection, the fruit undergoes maceration for up to 45 days and then fermentation, after which the wine is bottled without filtration.

Mamuthone is the winery's star product and an excellent example of the Cannonau variety grown in this region, originating from vineyards aged around 50 years old. A ruby red colour, it releases on the nose profound and complex, locally-induced aromas of Mediterranean shrubs. It is strong and powerful on the palate, and counterbalances its notable alcohol content with a very pleasant freshness and some fine, tasty tannins. A perfect wine for autumn which pairs up particularly well with meat stews, game and cured cheeses.

  • Alcohol content: 15,0%
  • Optimum serving temperature: Between 16ºC and 18ºC
