It was not until the early 1960s, and thanks to some highly motivated producers, that a profound change occurred which led to the introduction of new varieties into this area's vineyards: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc. Since then, these have been the varieties which have dominated the region and benefitted from a microclimate and terroir that are noted for elegance and refinement, characteristics which the classic production method of sparkling wines enhances even more.
We have come up with our selection this month so that you can get to know this brilliant young wine-producing region with three of its noteworthy products: a sparkling wine from Berlucchi, one of Franciacorta's most iconic wineries; a Brut from La Ferghetina, a robust family-owned winery; and the Curtefranca Rosso from one of the most popular and internationally renowned wineries, Ca' del Bosco. Three very different products that have as a common denominator their high quality and the pleasure and enjoyment they provide. Let curiosity get the better of you and whichever of the bottles you choose to open first, we're sure it won't take long before you decide to open a second...

Sparkling. La Ferghettina Franciacorta, Italy Chardonnay, Pinot Noir
Bottle: £13.90 club members / £15.94 non-members
Franciacorta Brut is obtained from principally the Chardonnay variety with a small amount of Pinot Noir. The grapes are harvested by hand in mid-August and, after a gentle press to allow extraction of the free-run juice, production of the base wine ensues, which will repose on its lees for 24 months.
In the glass, it emanates fruit aromas, especially citrus ones, but also the scent of white flowers and wafts of bread crust. These aromas are confirmed on the palate, and it appears a wine of medium structure, creamy texture and pleasant flavour. Franciacorta is a sparkling wine that is finely crafted, forthright, without superfluities, fresh and an absolute pleasure for the palate.

Sparkling. Guido Berlucchi Franciacorta, Italy Chardonnay, Pinot Noir
Bottle: £12.62 club members / £14.34 non-members
Cellarius Brut is made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes grown exclusively on estate-owned parcels. The base wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks with the exception of a small amount which undergoes its alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in barrels; this base wine reposes afterwards on its lees for a minimum of 30 months.
Served in a glass, under a quickly dispersing layer of mousse, we encounter a straw-coloured wine with an abundance of fine bubbles. On the nose, it displays some primary aromas of bread crust, citrus and white fruits, along with an elegant mineral note. On the palate, its freshness and tastiness are predominant, with a delightful, citrusy finish.

The result is a versatile and pleasant, medium-bodied wine. On the nose it displays aromas of herbs, sweet bay leaves, ripe plums and spices. The tannins are an absolute delight, the wine is fresh and makes for very pleasurable drinking. Curtefranca Rosso is a traditionally classic wine, produced for us today by Ca' del Bosco with the utmost care and attention, in order to maintain its extremely high quality.
