About this selection...

Franciacorta is a splendid region in Lombardy, there with Trento and Oltrepò Pavese, and one of the most important areas in Italy for producing sparkling wines. Meandering along its green hills, caressed by the Lake Iseo breezes and dotted with the multitude of wineries where its wines are produced, it is hard to believe that fifty years ago this region's wine production was of such little consequence and limited to a few red wines made for local consumption.

It was not until the early 1960s, and thanks to some highly motivated producers, that a profound change occurred which led to the introduction of new varieties into this area's vineyards: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc. Since then, these have been the varieties which have dominated the region and benefitted from a microclimate and terroir that are noted for elegance and refinement, characteristics which the classic production method of sparkling wines enhances even more.

We have come up with our selection this month so that you can get to know this brilliant young wine-producing region with three of its noteworthy products: a sparkling wine from Berlucchi, one of Franciacorta's most iconic wineries; a Brut from La Ferghetina, a robust family-owned winery; and the Curtefranca Rosso from one of the most popular and internationally renowned wineries, Ca' del Bosco. Three very different products that have as a common denominator their high quality and the pleasure and enjoyment they provide. Let curiosity get the better of you and whichever of the bottles you choose to open first, we're sure it won't take long before you decide to open a second...

La Ferghettina Brut (2 bottles)

Sparkling. La Ferghettina Franciacorta, Italy Chardonnay, Pinot Noir

Bottle: £14.44 club members / £16.56 non-members

Behind the La Ferghettina wines lies the passion of an entire family: that of Roberto Gatti, his wife and their two children, both oenologists. Since 1991 the winery has been presenting sparkling wines made in accordance with traditional methods and recognised for the high quality of their crafting and the very pleasurable end result.

Franciacorta Brut is obtained from principally the Chardonnay variety with a small amount of Pinot Noir. The grapes are harvested by hand in mid-August and, after a gentle press to allow extraction of the free-run juice, production of the base wine ensues, which will repose on its lees for 24 months.

In the glass, it emanates fruit aromas, especially citrus ones, but also the scent of white flowers and wafts of bread crust. These aromas are confirmed on the palate, and it appears a wine of medium structure, creamy texture and pleasant flavour. Franciacorta is a sparkling wine that is finely crafted, forthright, without superfluities, fresh and an absolute pleasure for the palate.

  • Alcohol content: 12,5%

Berlucchi Cellarius Brut 2008 (2 bottles)

Sparkling. Guido Berlucchi Franciacorta, Italy Chardonnay, Pinot Noir

Bottle: £13.11 club members / £14.90 non-members

Birthdays, celebrations, Christmas festivities... It is difficult in Italy to find someone who has not raised a toast with a bottle of Berlucchi on some occasion, and the truth is that this famous winery has the distinction of having been the first to identify possibilities of sparkling wine production in the Franciacorta region. Thanks to the intuition, courage and determination of Guido Berlucchi and Franco Ziliani, the winery's owner and oenologist respectively, Berlucchi since the 1960s (the decade to which their sparkling wine range '61 is dedicated) has been the leading winery in the Italian traditional method.

Cellarius Brut is made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes grown exclusively on estate-owned parcels. The base wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks with the exception of a small amount which undergoes its alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in barrels; this base wine reposes afterwards on its lees for a minimum of 30 months.

Served in a glass, under a quickly dispersing layer of mousse, we encounter a straw-coloured wine with an abundance of fine bubbles. On the nose, it displays some primary aromas of bread crust, citrus and white fruits, along with an elegant mineral note. On the palate, its freshness and tastiness are predominant, with a delightful, citrusy finish.

  • Alcohol content: 12,5%
  • Optimum serving temperature: Between 4ºC and 6ºC
  • Drink now or keep until 2018.

Ca' del Bosco Curtefranca Rosso 2010 (2 bottles)

Red. Ca' del Bosco Curtefranca, Italy Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon

Bottle: £11.50 club members / £13.07 non-members

From the Franciacorta region there comes Curtefranca Rosso, a sincere dry wine made from the blending of the most popular international varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. These grapes emanate from six vineyards and are vinified separately. A fact worth highlighting is that Ca' del Bosco doesn't add sulphites during bottling in order to guarantee the perfectly sound condition of the final product.

The result is a versatile and pleasant, medium-bodied wine. On the nose it displays aromas of herbs, sweet bay leaves, ripe plums and spices. The tannins are an absolute delight, the wine is fresh and makes for very pleasurable drinking. Curtefranca Rosso is a traditionally classic wine, produced for us today by Ca' del Bosco with the utmost care and attention, in order to maintain its extremely high quality.
