About this selection...

On reaching the Piazza Capsoni, in Monleale, if you make your way over to the first house on the right and knock on the door, it will be opened by a gentleman, most likely with hair uncombed — perhaps palpable proof of a mind that is constantly preoccupied. His name is Walter Massa, one of the most highly acclaimed and well-known producers in Italy.

Apart from making delicious red and white wines, Walter has the distinction of having re-established the connection linking the Tortona hills with the Timorasso variety, an ancient grape that had always existed in this area until its cultivation was abandoned which nearly resulted in its extinction. But at the beginning of the 1990s, a group of producers, led by Walter Massa himself and his charismatic vision of the future, decided to express the unique characteristics of this grape in the wines which today are so admired by specialist critics and lovers of fine wine.

The selection we are proposing this month includes three original wines, unpretentious but most acceptable, which we at Italvinus are very enthusiastic about: a Freisa (a largely forgotten variety but now fortunately reinstated), a Barbera and the aforementioned Timorasso.

What better way to start the year than with a good find? Our January suggestions enable you to discover the excellence of a great producer and the merits of some varieties fairly unknown so far. Three delicious and admirable wines which yet again demonstrate that great wines don't have to cost a fortune. We're convinced that Massa's wines are an excellent way to start off the year... Enjoy them!

Vigneti Massa Pietra del Gallo 2013 (2 bottles)

Red. Vigneti Massa Colli Tortonesi, Italy Freisa

Bottle: £8.33 club members / £9.48 non-members

If you've never had the pleasure of a glass of Freisa, we're inviting you to do so with Pietra del Gallo. Taste it a sip at a time and become enthralled by this ancient Piedmont grape that has remained inexplicably in oblivion for such a long time.

In the glass it exhibits bright, clear, violet hues and releases aromas that triumph due to their purity and simplicity: notes of violet, cherry, pepper and musk. The palate confirms all its smoothness and tastiness; it is fresh, fleshy and offers a light tingling sensation on the palate which makes it even more pleasant. To summarise, a charming wine, robust, pleasurable but not overly complicated. Perfect for accompanying a savoury aperitif with cooked sausages and cured meats, and an ideal option for those who prefer a glass of red wine before a meal.

  • Alcohol content: 13,0%
  • Optimum serving temperature: Between 14ºC and 16ºC

Vigneti Massa Terra 2013 (2 bottles)

Red. Vigneti Massa Colli Tortonesi, Italy Barbera

Bottle: £5.26 club members / £6.46 non-members

A wine that is difficult to resist. Terra is a simply delightful example of the Barbera variety which appeals at first because of its affordable price but then proves itself, due to its quality and many other merits, once tasted.

A wine which, once in the glass, offers an intense and bright colour, confirming its fullness and tastiness. On the nose the scents of humus and cherries stand out, and on the palate it appears fresh, fruity and satisfying, as befits a fine Barbera.

  • Alcohol content: 12,5%
  • Optimum serving temperature: Between 16ºC and 18ºC

Vigneti Massa Timorasso Derthona 2012 (2 bottles)

White. Vigneti Massa Colli Tortonesi, Italy Timorasso

Bottle: £12.20 club members / £13.70 non-members

Walter Massa has certainly earned the accolade of having brought to the limelight such an ancient variety as the Timorasso, clearly showcasing its capabilities and being amply rewarded with the success and popularity of its wines. At the moment, the Timorasso is considered one of the varieties with greater aromatic complexity, minerality and evolutionary potential. Wines made with it, having Walter Massa's excellent crus as the finest representatives, are ranked among Italy's greatest wines and are often on a par with northern Europe's best wines.

If you have still not had the chance to pour yourself a glass of this delicious variety, Walter Massa's Timorasso Derthona offers an excellent opportunity to get to know it. A wine of great charm, yet not always easy to understand. In the glass it releases floral, fruity, mineral and citrus aromas. On the palate it exhibits a very notable balance between warmth and tastiness, and offers long persistence.

Don't be surprised by the complexity which it acquires if you manage to keep it unopened for a few years.
