About this selection...

Sicily again provides us with the inspiration for our Club Italvinus selection. Under the title of Trinacria, the name by which the Greeks knew it, our choices for the month of March propose a journey that will encompass the island's length and breadth as regards its wines... With the SP68 made by Arianna Occhipinti, a fervent champion of wine's naturalness, we can savour the Vittoria terroir and the dusty tracks skirting round her vineyards of Frappato and Nero d'Avola; with Maquè Perricone, we'll travel over to the north-east to try out, most likely for the first time, an indigenous grape grown organically at an altitude of six hundred metres; finally, we'll conclude our trip on Etna with Passorosso, produced from Nerello Mascalese grapes starting life in vineyards almost a century old.

Three Sicilian wines, geographically set apart, but sharing low-intervention production methods, the prominence of native varieties and an overwhelming freshness... Have your corkscrew at hand and get ready to enjoy the irresistible delights of Sicilian wines.

Arianna Occhipinti Sp 68 Rosso 2014 (2 bottles)

Red. Arianna Occhipinti Sicilia, Italy Frappato, Nero d'Avola

Bottle: £11.71 club members / £13.38 non-members

Halfway along the "strada provinciale", a local road, the SP 68 running between Vittoria and Pedalino, we come across the winery of Arianna Occhipinti, a Sicilian oenologist whose wines champion, in a most resolute and natural way, the identity of this particular spot.

Arianna Occhipinti's lands are cultivated by hand and are rich in elements that help the optimum development of her young vineyards, which do not grow very high in order to benefit from the heat given off by the ground. The varieties found there are Frappato, Nero d'Avola, Albanello and Zibibbo.

After the harvest, also carried out manually, the grapes undergo a meticulous selection before a simple and natural vinification. The grapes ferment by means of native yeasts, and subsequent production procedures result in low intervention by keeping to simple and traditional processes. All this gives rise to healthy, honest and authentic wines.

SP68 is a versatile young wine, perfect for any season of the year, and ideal on countless occasions and for numerous pairings, from a barbecue with friends to an impromptu dinner. A light and delicate wine which flows on the palate without any discernible difficulty... but with a character and personality which make it irresistible.

SP68 is the firm's entry wine and made from the Frappato (70%) and Nero d'Avola (30%) varieties. Appearing a ruby-red colour, it's a pleasant and fresh wine that exudes aromas of ripe red fruits, strawberry, cherry, carob, liquorice, tobacco, leather... It's flavoursome on the palate: red and black-coloured berries, herbs, spices... A juicy and vibrant composition, which is in perfect balance with some subtle tannins, fine acidity and minerality.

  • Alcohol content: 12,5%
  • Optimum serving temperature: Between 16ºC and 18ºC

Porta del Vento Maquè Perricone 2013 (2 bottles)

Red. Porta del Vento Sicilia, Italy Perricone

Bottle: £10.96 club members / £12.44 non-members

Porta del Vento is Marco Sferlazzo's winery in Camporeale, in the province of Palermo. Located at an altitude of six hundred metres, the estate comprises fourteen hectares of vineyards which grow on steep terraces constantly buffeted by the wind. The organic cultivation methods adopted by the winery, as well as the specific features of the soil and the microclimate and the vines, aged more than forty years old, along with the low yields, offer the best commendation for these healthy, good quality wines.

The Perricone is an age-old red grape variety, native to Sicily but not widely grown. Nowadays, it's mainly found on the western side of the island, such as in Camporeale, where Porta del Vento makes its Maquè, a fresh and balanced wine which charmingly reveals this land's characteristics.

Maquè Perricone is characterised by a nose that seems rather dark, with aromas of black cherries and plum jam on a balsamic background, alongside other notes of oregano, black olives, resin and spices such as cloves and pepper. On the palate it reveal good structure, with well-integrated tannins and just the right amount of freshness and minerality.

  • Alcohol content: 13,0%
  • Optimum serving temperature: Between 16ºC and 18ºC
  • Drink now or keep until 2020.

Passopisciaro Passorosso 2013 (2 bottles)

Red. Passopisciaro Terre Siciliane, Italy Nerello Mascalese

Bottle: £18.82 club members / £21.39 non-members

Passorosso starts out life on Etna, at an altitude ranging between 500 and 1,100 metres above sea level. It comes from vineyards that are nearly a hundred years old and planted with the Nerello Mascalese variety. On the Sicilian wine-producing scene, Etna is a unique and beautiful region which not only offers a landscape that is both surreal and stunning, but also wines with an elegance, finesse and minerality that prove difficult to find in other reds produced on the island. In addition, there's a special concentration of primary aromas in the wines resulting from the big difference in day and night temperatures.

Passorosso, which is the Passopisciaro's entry wine, is obtained from Nerello Mascalese grapes originating from various locations within the Etna Cru. Appearing a magnificent and bright ruby colour, in the glass it emanates enticing fruit and spicy aromas, red fruits, violets, pepper and aromatic herbs, that work wonderfully well with the delightful minerality. On the palate, its freshness and crisp texture precede red fruits that seem chewy, particularly red currant and cherry. Tannins are present on a palate that flows smoothly, cleanly and easily, and ends with a long finish exhibiting pleasant mineral hints.

  • Alcohol content: 14,0%
  • Optimum serving temperature: Between 16ºC and 18ºC
