About this selection...

This year, in 2016, Italy's most representative wine celebrates three hundred years of its history. It was in 1716 that Grand Duke Cosimo III of Medici decided to demarcate some lands specially noted for their production of high quality wines, comprising an area between Florence and Siena which constitutes the birthplace of Chianti Classico. The term "Classico" accompanying this denomination recognises the historic region of this wine, one of the most picturesque wine-growing regions in Italy, with its landscape of gently undulating hills dotted with elegant villas, churches and rural homesteads surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and woods.

Chianti Classico is one of the grandest expressions of the Sangiovese, Italy's most extensively-grown red grape. The bouquet of its wines is compiled from a vivacious composition of red fruits and flowers, complemented by some fine spices and strong minerality also to be found on the palate, where this red appears energetic, fresh and well-balanced. These are the general characteristics of a good Chianti Classico, but in an expanse of land extending over a surface area of 70,000 ha, many other features play their part in the end result: the altitude and latitude, the soil composition, the vineyards' exposure to the sun, the cultivation system and, naturally, the producer's handiwork.

Our selection for this month includes three splendid examples of this great wine: the Fèlsina Chianti Classico is a pure and elegant Sangiovese originating from the southern part of the denomination; Ama, the Chianti Classico produced by Castello di Ama, comes from the village of the same name, located in the heart of this denomination, and is made from the Sangiovese variety with a small amount of Merlot; finally, the Chianti Classico from Montesecondo, a small winery which works on biodynamic principles and offers a true expression of the north of the denomination, producing a Chianti Classico of great freshness.

Join in our celebrations of this legendary wine's three hundred years and enjoy once more its balance, drinkability and versatility. Three hundred years which reflect the magnificence of Italian wine and its ability to provide us with moments of real pleasure.

Fèlsina Chianti Classico 2013 (2 bottles)

Red. Fèlsina Chianti Classico, Italy Sangiovese

Bottle: £9.78 club members / £11.11 non-members

The lands belonging to the Fèlsina winery comprise up to 600 ha of vineyards, olive groves, woods and other cereal crops, vegetables and sunflowers. At one time a farm owned by the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, it was a place especially dedicated to growing olives with hardly any hectares given over to vines, but in the last 50 years Fèlsina has turned it into one of the most important wineries in the production of Sangiovese variety wines.

The vineyards which give rise to the Fèlsina Chianti Classico, the company's entry wine, are located in Castelnuovo Berardenga, a municipality located in the south-eastern area of the denomination. The altitude of the land ranges between 320 and 420 metres and the soil composition varies too: in the highest part there is a predominance of quartz, limestone and alluvial deposits, while the area closer to Siena has a prevalence of sandstone and mud.

Made solely from the Sangiovese variety, the Fèlsina Chianti Classico ages for 12 months in medium-capacity Slavonian oak barrels, and a small batch in second and third-fill barrels. The result is a wine of amazing richness and intensity which imparts sensual aromas of ripe fruit, spices and an irresistible minerality. Cherries, flowers and stones are at the heart of this wine, but besides these there are also other aromas of liquorice and tobacco which contribute elegance and charm to the ensemble. It proves delightfully consistent on the palate, with a velvety texture that makes every single drop an absolute pleasure.

Castello di Ama Chianti Classico Ama 2014 (2 bottles)

Red. Castello di Ama Chianti Classico, Italy Sangiovese, Merlot

Bottle: £12.81 club members / £16.07 non-members

Ama is the name of a village which nestles on top of the hills to the south-west of Gaiole in Chianti, at almost 500 metres above sea level. A lovely, fertile landscape where vineyards and olive groves follow one another as far as the eye can see in a picture of captivating beauty.

Castello di Ama possesses about 80 ha which lie round and about this locality, divided into 4 parcels known by the names of Bellavista, San Lorenzo, La Casuccia and Montebuoni. The Sangiovese and Merlot varieties, originating from the youngest plants in these vineyards, are used to make the Chianti Classico Ama. The considerable diversity in soils (with Bellavista having calcareous-clay; San Lorenzo, calcareous; Casuccia, clay and stoney; Montebuoni, very varied), gives rise to a seductive and well-balanced Chianti Clásico.

A wine which is inviting to taste due to its colour and complex bouquet that features aromas of cherries, woodland fruits and roses, along with others of tobacco, pepper and sweet notes of cinnamon. On the palate it's flavoursome, balanced and clean. A supple, immediate, elegant and refined wine... simply irresistible.

Montesecondo Chianti Classico 2014 (2 bottles)

Red. Montesecondo Chianti Classico, Italy Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino

Bottle: £15.92 club members / £18.09 non-members

In the most northerly part of the Chianti Classico denomination, Silvio Messana makes his wines following biodynamic principles, working hard on and for the land, using his expert hands to express the special characteristics of this terroir. In Cerbaia, where the winery is located, the soil is predominantly of clay with sandy and loamy areas, giving rise to wines with a good amount of alcohol, mature aromas and fleshiness on the palate. Messana also owns parcels at a higher altitude, at around 450 metres, with the presence of limestone soils subsequently being reflected in the marked acidity we find in the Montesecondo Chianti Classico.

An authentic Chianti Classico made using the Sangiovese variety with a small addition of two other indigenous grapes: the Colorino and the Canaiolo. These two varieties, mostly emanating from old vines, impart balance and good length to the end result.

A wine appearing a resplendent ruby colour that highlights on the nose its varietal notes: cherries, flowers, raspberry conserve and afterwards, delicate spices and notable minerality which portend quite an invigorating mouthful. On the palate, expectations are not disappointed and the Montesecondo Chianti Classico is authentic and decidedly substantial: juicy, crisp, fruity and fresh, with a touch of harshness to the tannins and a pleasantly bitter, lengthy finish.
