About this selection...

Our Club Italvinus selection for the month of September comprises three rarities in winemaking which originate from three indigenous varieties produced in very limited quantities. One of the unusual features of Italian wine is indeed the existence of thousands of ancient varieties which grow all over the country to a greater or lesser extent. Aware of the importance of this heritage and its preservation, we're especially pleased to have found for you three locally-grown wines, not easy to get hold of, that enable us to enjoy such restricted varieties as the Sirica, with which Feudi di San Gregorio are producing the only wine in the world made from this grape.

We're presenting three reds made from quite unusual varieties, grown in very limited areas, to give rise to wines of the highest quality and with all the charm of their particular typicity. Three labels which convey an enduring link with the terroirs that the producers of these wineries have been able to recognise and interpret. With Sirica you can enjoy one of the most ancient varieties still in existence today and you'll discover in its dark bouquet all the mystery of the Irpinia region; Terrano will let you appreciate this variety's difficult profile, its acidity, its tannicity and a character as wild as the Karst countryside from which it derives; and finally with Cherchi's Cagnulari, you'll be filling your glass with all the juiciness of the fruit and the freshness of a light Mediterranean breeze.

Feudi di San Gregorio Sirica 2013 (2 bottles)

Red. Feudi di San Gregorio Campania, Italy Sirica

Bottle: £8.58 club members / £9.86 non-members

The Sirica is an ancient variety with a mystery behind its origins, and in all likelihood it was used by the Romans in their winemaking. Although it apparently disappeared without trace over the centuries, we can still find it nowadays sparsely scattered over Italy. After the discovery in Irpinia of four vines aged more than two hundred years old, Feudi di San Gregorio has carried out an in-depth study of this variety's DNA and reproduced it in a small vineyard from which stems a unique wine, profoundly Mediterranean and with great personality.

Sirica appears a beautiful ruby colour (the name of the variety itself probably derives from "syricum", a red dye widely used in Roman times) and releases rich notes of blackberry, myrtle, liquorice and black pepper, in a clean-cut bouquet from which each nuance emerges with amazing vitality. The wild nature of this variety is tamed in the cellar through ageing in French oak barrels, and this makes Sirica a pleasant drink suiting all palates. A fresh, smooth wine that's very well-balanced and has some characteristically velvety tannins.

Skerk Teran 2013 (2 bottles)

Red. Skerk Venezia Giulia, Italy Terrano

Bottle: £16.60 club members / £19.47 non-members

The Skerk family is dedicated to the cultivation and vinification of some indigenous grapes such as the Terrano, a very old variety from the Carso DOC, which this family grows and produces according to the longest-standing traditions and with every respect shown to nature. The vineyards are sited on rocky terrain, rich in limestone and iron, and render very low yields. Vineyard management is carried out by means of organic procedures that reduce intervention to a minimum. Thanks to all this, the company now makes forthright, sincere wines which have identity.

Teran, produced in limited quantities, is an expressive wine that's an impenetrable violet colour, with crisp acidity and slightly harsh tannins. On the nose there are the typical aromas of black fruit jam, dried violets, thyme, cedar wood, juniper, coffee, leather, liquorice and rust, seemingly making a rather dark ensemble but complex and intriguing overall. On the palate, it's a vigorous wine that has great freshness and some noticeable tannins accompanying its fruit-driven finish. A wine which is slightly on the harsh side and most unusual, and for that precise reason, one that's hard to forget. To be enjoyed from now onwards or for keeping on the rack for several more years.

  • Alcohol content: 11,5%
  • Optimum serving temperature: Between 16ºC and 18ºC

Cherchi Cagnulari 2014 (2 bottles)

Red. Cherchi Isola dei Nuraghi, Italy Cagnulari

Bottle: £8.90 club members / £10.12 non-members

The Cagnulari is a red grape which was probably grown extensively in Sardinia throughout the 17th Century but nowadays is found restricted to an area in the province of Sassari. On the clay and chalky soils of this sunny spot, specifically in Usini, producer Giovanni Cherchi carried out a restoration programme of ancient varieties. This has enabled him to increase in number the few Cagnulari vines with the aim of producing a single varietal wine so that this variety can be enjoyed in all its purity. A quality wine - straightforward, typical and local.

In the glass it appears a bright and intense ruby colour and emanates aromas of red fruits (ripe redcurrants, strawberries and raspberries), plums, blackberries, geraniums and leather. A whiff of white roses endows it with a feminine note and the character of the terroir emerges exuberantly through hints of Mediterranean bushes. On the palate it appears full and pleasant, flavoursome and fresh, with an agreeable smoothness recalling the ripe fruit. A most appealing wine with a lovely flavour, a bottle that will steal your heart.

  • Alcohol content: 13,0%
  • Optimum serving temperature: Between 16ºC and 18ºC
