About this selection...

The Sangiovese is the variety which gives rise to some of the great landmarks of Italian wine, including the Brunello di Montalcino and the illustrious Chianti Classico, but apart from them, this variety also extends all over the hills in the centre of the country, where we find it in wines of different styles and in versions that vary according to the particular area.

Despite these varied origins, the Sangiovese always delivers high standards of quality which are apparent in wines which are structured and have character, revealing clear-cut and intense aromas, and with remarkable freshness, pleasant tannins and extraordinary longevity. Our suggestion for this month will enable you to get right to the heart of this variety with a choice sample exhibiting its capabilities.

With the Romagna Sangiovese Ceregio from Fattoria Zerbina, one of the most up-to-date wineries on the Italian wine-making scene, we go over to the Faenza hills, in the Romagna region, where the Sangiovese grows in splendid vineyards and attains an amazing quality and personality. As regards the Morellino di Scansano Riserva we move into the Grosseto valleys, in the south of Tuscany, to enjoy a harmonious and silky wine, the result of excellent work with the Sangiovese carried out by the young Le Pupille winery. Finally, a Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a majestic offering from the Bindella winery with its I Quadri, and all its powerfulness, precision, fullness and freshness.

There are so many interpretations of this variety that it's difficult to get to know the Sangiovese's full extent. Find out more about it with the exceptional wines of terroirs such as those of the Romagna, Maremma and Montepulciano which you'll be able to discover in our selection for this month. A real delight at a special price for our Club Italvinus customers!

Fattoria Zerbina Romagna Sangiovese Ceregio 2014 (2 bottles)

Red. Fattoria Zerbina Romagna, Italy Sangiovese, Merlot, Ancellotta

Bottle: £6.20 club members / £7.06 non-members

Grown organically in the rolling Faenza hills, the Sangiovese, along with the sun-dried Albana, is one of the principal varieties used by Fattoria Zerbina, a winery which has succeeded in getting a reassessment of this region and the quality of its wines. The winery's vineyards enjoy different exposures, but the main contingent of Sangiovese growing here can generally be found on some favourable lands with clay and chalky soils that endow the wine with special body and freshness.

Resulting from a very carefully selected harvest, the Ceregio made by Fattoria Zerbina is a straightforward, lively interpretation of a Sangiovese grown in the Romagna region. Vinified in steel and concrete tanks, the end result is a wine that's a bright ruby colour with well-refined and clearly-defined aromas: notes of red fruits on a background of dried violets, aromatic herbs and darker touches of earth and undergrowth. On the palate, it reveals all its great drinkability with a remarkable freshness and vivid yet at the same time soft tannins, flavoursome, persistent and with the same complexity encountered on the nose.

A wine which, unlike most, expresses the balance and harmony exhibited by the Sangiovese in this region and which brings to mind Romagna's gentle hills and the warm Adriatic breezes that give flavour and profundity to its wines.

  • Alcohol content: 12,5%
  • Optimum serving temperature: Between 16ºC and 18ºC

Le Pupille Morellino di Scansano Riserva 2012 (2 bottles)

Red. Fattoria Le Pupille Morellino di Scansano, Italy Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon

Bottle: £11.52 club members / £13.09 non-members

Fattoria Le Pupille is one of the most traditional wineries in new Tuscany and has been offering for more than thirty years some of the region's most highly regarded and award-winning wines. The winery runs the vineyard according to organic principles, based on total respect for the environment and with a clever balance between tradition and innovation. Orientated in particular towards experimenting with international varieties which today now form part of the Maremma landscape, Le Pupille is also one of the prime movers of the Morellino di Scansano, a wine produced in the Scansano area with a minimum 85% of the Sangiovese variety.

The little Sangiovese becomes mighty in the hands of this outstanding winery, on whose clay and ferrous lands, located in the gentle Grosseto valleys in the south of Tuscany, it attains high quality standards.

Morellino Riserva represents the pinnacle of this experimental work which seeks to harmonise as much as possible the vineyards with their land of origin. A wine that's an elegant and attractive ruby colour with garnet glints, which exhibits on the nose intense notes of cherry, typical of the Sangiovese variety, and other balsamic, spicy, mineral and undergrowth hints. On the palate, the refined tannins, reinforced by a small addition of Cabernet Sauvignon, achieve a harmonious balance between smoothness, delicacy and persistence. A great Morellino that has benefitted too from a wise ageing from which a special profundity and longevity ensue.

  • Alcohol content: 13,5%
  • Optimum serving temperature: Between 16ºC and 18ºC
  • Drink now or keep until 2020.

Bindella Nobile di Montepulciano I Quadri 2012 (2 bottles)

Red. Bindella Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Italy Sangiovese

Bottle: £18.12 club members / £20.59 non-members

The Bindella story is one of many involving visionary investors, in this case Swiss, who fell in love with the land of Tuscany and chose to bring out the best of their vineyards. From then on, more than thirty years later, the winery has risen to the highest quality and prestige in its production, being today one of the greatest exponents of the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.

I Quadri, along with its sibling Vallocaia, is one of the winery's most prize-winning products. In the glass it appears a bright ruby colour, so deep and appealing; on the nose, it comes over as rich and elegant, with notes of red fruits, cocoa, cloves and liquorice in a bouquet of extraordinary complexity. The local climate, ideal due to its broad temperature range, and the merits of the terroir, at 400 metres above sea level and with clay soils typical of the Montepulciano hills, endow the wines with a distinctive finesse on the palate.

This is a Vino Nobile as rich and full as it is fresh and mineral. Flavoursome, with silky, enveloping tannins, and an elegance which does not fade over the years. The ideal bottle for a fine meal, to accompany the most elaborate and rich dishes.

  • Alcohol content: 14,5%
  • Optimum serving temperature: Between 16ºC and 18ºC
