About this selection...

After having been a pupil of Dr. Guyot in Burgundy, in 1857 Gaetano Bertani returned to Veneto to put into practice the most modern systems of vine cultivation. As a result of this, the Bertani name has passed into both Italian and European wine history as the winery that brought to the Valpolicella the fundamental technique for producing wines in the classic style and impeccably balanced.

Held in high regard since the 19th Century and served at the most exclusive tables of the United States and England (a Bertani wine was included in the official menu at the Coronation of George VI of England in 1937), Bertani wines feature nowadays among the jewels that Veneto has to offer, especially their Amarone and Valpolicella labels. Their first vintage of the Amarone Classico in 1958 was quite a benchmark for this denomination and today it's an Italian wine icon the whole world over.

Regardless of vineyards amounting to 200 hectares and production totalling 2 million bottles a year, every bottle of Bertani continues to deliver excellent quality. The winery's traditional and majestic style is confirmed year after year in its Amarone Classico, a wine that's smooth and profound, velvety, austere, with hints of fruit conserves, and having superb persistence and longevity. Resulting from the Valpolicella's great red varieties, skilfully sun-dried for 4 months, the Amarone is vinified according to the traditional method and afterwards goes on to age for 6 years in large oak barrels.

Apart from this iconic wine, the Bertani catalogue includes excellent wines which prove very good value for money: the great Ognisanti, a Valpolicella Superiore boasting plenty of class and tremendous personality; the Ripasso, a full-bodied and extremely smooth wine thanks to its maceration on the Amarone lees and skins; and the Valpolicella, fresher and more immediate, and very versatile when paired with food. Looking for an Amarone to suit all tastes? Valpantena covers all bases: young and at the same time well-developed, intense and at the same time expressive and easy to drink.

Bertani Valpolicella Classico Sup. Ognisanti 2014 (2 bottles)

Red. Bertani Valpolicella, Italy Corvina, Rondinella

Bottle: £13.34 club members / £15.62 non-members

Can a Valpolicella excite us like an Amarone or a great Ripasso does? At Bertani, and many other wineries, they've succeeded in doing so. Ognisanti is now a paradigm of this denomination and a genuine masterpiece of the Venetian tradition. A Valpolicella of unparalleled elegance and incredible silkiness thanks to its ageing for 18 month in barrels, a quarter of them new.

Fruit of a careful selection of the best grapes of the Tenuta Novare cru, owned by Bertani since 1957, Ognisanti owes its name to an ancient chapel situated in the centre of the vineyard. The ideal southern exposure and soils rich in limestone endow the Corvina and Rondinella varieties with perfect fullness, which converts into a wine of great freshness and whose long ageing confers a longevity that can last for decades.

The harvest, occurring rather late, combined with a long, slow maceration, gives the wine its rich concentration and an elegance that becomes ever more noticeable after its maturation in barrels and ultimate refinement of 6 months in bottle. The garnet hues vouch for its perfect evolution and, on the nose, it displays notes of ripe cherries, jam, sweet spices such as cinnamon, along with eucalyptus, black pepper and leather.

It doesn't disappoint on the palate either, and we encounter a smooth wine which brings to mind the finest Amarones. A smoothness that's accompanied by an optimal freshness, magnificent and enveloping breadth, with sweet notes of dried plums, of light toasty notes and a very lengthy finish.

Bertani Valpolicella Ripasso 2014 (2 bottles)

Red. Bertani Valpolicella Ripasso, Italy Corvina, Merlot, Rondinella

Bottle: £10.16 club members / £11.55 non-members

From the best Valpolicella Classica and Valpantena vineyards, which are the source of Casa Bertani’s exceptional range of wines, comes this splendid Ripasso, from soil which is as much limestone-marly as it is sometimes volcanic. The technique is standard: after the first fermentation in steel that takes place after the harvest, there is a second one, around March, which "runs back" the wine over the skins of the Amarone, which, far from being exhausted, are still really rich in extractive substances and native yeasts.

Be it Amarone in miniature or top-notch Valpolicella, Bertani's Ripasso is even further increased in stature by the exceptional nine-months’ aging in large 50 hl barrels which exalts the hybrid nature of this wine, which is young but well-developed and well-rounded at the same time, with a distinctly opulent personality set against a background of untamed youthfulness.

From its intense, dark and determined purple colour with hints of violet, this Ripasso hits you with its intense, crisp and broad ripe red fruit bouquet. Then follow deeper dark fruit notes, such as blackberry, blackcurrant and ripe cherry, jammy cherry and at times cherry in alcohol. Even though it is velvety, harmonious, full-bodied and intense, it is also sprightly and sleek, which contributes to its crisp, fruity and varietal nature and the interesting flavour, which just screams out to be drunk.

Bertani Amarone della Valpolicella Valpantena 2014 (2 bottles)

Red. Bertani Amarone della Valpolicella, Italy Corvina, Rondinella

Bottle: £27.49 club members / £31.24 non-members

Full-bodied, genuine and robust, Bertani's Amarone Valpantena is undoubtedly one of the most important and successful wines of this well-loved Valpolicella cru, located north of Verona on limestone-marly and clay-rich soil, particularly rich in iron. This extremely varied landscape produces a sprightly and congenial classic Amarone, which is rewarding and accessible. It is definitely well-rounded, but also breezy.

After the harvest, which is strictly manual starting from mid-September, the raisining takes place, which in all respects is comparable to that of the Amarone Classico, as it takes place in crates within typical grape-drying chambers until mid-January. Aging, which lasts about 30 months, is careful and top-class: a portion of the wine is kept in big Slavonia oak casks while a smaller percentage is kept in barriques.

Gorgeous ruby red in colour with enduring purple reflections, Valpantena from Casa Bertani emits intense fragrances of jammy cherry or cherry in alcohol, sour cherry, berries, dried fruits and sweet spices, which are characteristic of the area. Young but full-blown, the taste is of a typical Valpantena, easy to drink and extraordinarily balanced. The soft and silky tannins give the wine an excellent structure, and the freshness, which is prominent and inviting, goes hand in hand with the enduring finish of ripe and fragrant fruit.
