About this selection...

Tuscany, indisputable homeland of the Sangiovese. A vine that requires no lengthy introduction. But how much does this superlative grape actually express itself? Its qualities, in particular its freshness and tannicity, make it ideal for long harvesting and long ageing in wood. It is in this guise that it fully expresses itself, in Brunello.

But is there a "radical" Sangiovese? A Sangiovese which, young and fresh, freely expresses all its masterful strokes, all its very super-refined robustness? The answer is yes, of course, but it can be found away from the numbers and above away from the buzz of the most prestigious environs. By venturing into wineries which are most connected to their territories, the enthusiast easily discovers sublime Montalcino Rossi, super-balanced and gentle Nobili di Montepulciano, even Supertuscans in which Sangiovese's expressiveness chomps at the bit and its candour is given free.

In this month's selection you will not find wines of decades-old longevity, nor nectars of incredible density and incredible concentration. What you will find the most authentic and elementary reasons why Sangiovese can become what it is most famous for in the world. That is, like in direct dialogue with the terroir and the vine even before mentioning the cellar, a treasure chest of the potency of this vine. A work of pure imagination that will awaken your senses and accompany you in an educational quest and, most importantly, in a friendship built to last!

Argiano Rosso di Montalcino 2015 (2 bottles)

Red. Argiano Rosso di Montalcino, Italy Sangiovese

Bottle: £11.33 club members / £12.80 non-members

The Brunello younger sibling is obtained from Sangiovese grapes deriving from the winery's best vineyards. After they've undergone a double fermentation, the wine ages for a year in second-use casks and large Slovenian oak barrels. The result of this careful production process is a red that's particularly smooth, balanced and easy to drink. The context, a seventeenth-century villa surrounded by cypresses, olive groves and rows of vines, helps you to conjure up a place in which the winemaking has persisted since 1581. Indeed, there is more to the Argiano range than the top wines, and showcases the highest qualitative excellence in the sublime Suolo and the international Non Confunditur, but also in the young and agile Rosso di Montalcino.

Argiano Rosso shares with the Brunello the elegance infused by the Montalcino terroir and the generous characteristics of the Sangiovese, but in this case it's more fruit-forward, immediate and lively than its older sibling. On the nose it exhibits well-defined aromas of red fruits and violets on a sound, earthy and balsamic background. On the palate it appears expressive, fresh, balanced and with a velvety texture. A rounded composition which becomes even more irresistible in the warm summer months.

From an informal barbecue with friends to the most classy dinner party, Argiano Rosso di Montalcino accompanies to perfection a great variety of dishes and brings a distinctive elegance to the occasion.

Montesecondo 2014 (2 bottles)

Red. Montesecondo Tuscany, Italy Sangiovese, Canaiolo

Bottle: £11.66 club members / £13.25 non-members

In the lively and experimental scene of Florentine Chianti, Montesecondo, from Casciano in Val di Pesa, is one of the most active and interesting companies. With its extraordinarily focused on the terroir, Montesecondo adopts a unique conception of wine, which is not only an expression of the land and the human hand, but also a product which in turn shapes the territory thus highlighting its changing nature and personality.

The land, managed using biodynamic principles, is divided into prevalently clay plots and others which are more calcareous. This heterogeneity produces wines which are at the same time structured, powerful and elegant, wines that are ready to overcome the challenge of the passing of the years, but being seductively pleasant from the very first moment. Fermented and aged only in steel, Montesecondo is the most honest and cheerful Sangiovese.

It is a typical and characteristic Sangiovese, enriched and authenticated, as in the Chianti tradition, by a variable component of Canaiolo. The colour is a good density ruby red. On the nose there are sensations of particularly youthful refinement, with fragrances of cherry and particular notes of aromatic herbs, with an international-style plant-based touch. With its extremely refined and gentle tannin, cutting but enveloping, Montesecondo is fresh and vigorous, with a beautiful and long fruity finish.

Dei Nobile di Montepulciano 2013 (2 bottles)

Red. Caterina Dei Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Italy Sangiovese, Canaiolo

Bottle: £14.69 club members / £16.69 non-members

The Dei family, active in the Montepulciano area for decades now, is one of the most solid wineries in the realm of Vino Nobile, which has been produced since 1985. Spread out among the historic Bossona vineyard and those of Martiena and Ciarliana, the Dei family properties are indeed famously some of the best suited to the big regional reds. The best vintage, Bossona, grows out of sandy and tuffy soils rich in skeleton, which is typical of the area, at an altitude of about 400 meters; while Martiena is sandy-sandstone and Ciarliana, slightly lower, out of clayey-calcareous soil.

The vineyard cultivation practices draw from some biodynamic principles, and therefore sees copper and sulphur as the only substances used, as well as abundant inter-row grassing. The cellar, equipped with geothermal system and located at a depth of 7 metres, is perfectly integrated into the environment.

The Nobile is the company's classic product. With 90% Sangiovese and a small amount of Canaiolo, the colour at first glance is beautiful vivid and shiny ruby, with good concentration. Intense and well-structured on the nose, it emanates hints of blackberries, china, rhubarb, face powder and spices. On the palate is stands out for its subtlety and freshness at the same time, with strong and lively tannins which are, however, perfectly integrated into one velvety and caressing body. The finish is lengthy in its fruity notes and is juicy and well-rounded.
