Sottimano Nebbiolo 2015 (2 bottles)

The Sottimano winery is one of the most typical and representative of the Barbaresco area, churning out an impressive – and sometimes incomparable - range of Nebbiolo year after year. Wines of great elegance but traditional at the same time, authoritative, classic but unrepeatable, noble, austere and refined at the same time. The down-to-earth and passionate winemakers, Rino and Andrea Sottimano, have now converted their wonderful vineyards to biological, and also produce an incredible young Nebbiolo which is among the best and more consistently excellent in the Langhe.

The Nebbiolo di Sottimano comes from the legendary 3.7 hectares of the Basarin vineyard in the municipality of Neive. This highly prestigious historical vineyard at a high altitude gives the wine an exceptional taste-aroma elegance, which is expressed in a bouquet which can already (and can even more so in the future) lay a claim to the highest appellation, Barbaresco. For now, given the young age of the vineyard (about 15 years old), the Sottimanos indeed still prefer to bottle this Barbaresco like a cru from Langhe Nebbiolo of enormous potential.

A wine of extraordinary class and personality, it is of a bright garnet red colour. At first the aroma has subtle spicy notes, to then open up to cherry and tobacco and with light shades of dried rose and liquorice. On the palate, it has a sturdy structure and silky and enveloping tannins; warm and elegant, the finish recalls the typical balsamic tones of Neive, its terroir of origin. Vinified with only native yeasts and never filtered, it undergoes malolactic fermentation and is aged in barriques (15% new) for about a year. Excellent with meat-based first courses, game, braised meat, red meat stews and aged cheeses.

The Rancia vineyard enjoys an extremely privileged position. It's located at an altitude of about 400 m, on top of the impressive hills which surround the town of Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the far south of the Chianti Classico sub-zone, very near to the denominations of Brunello di Montalcino, Nobile di Montepulciano and the Maremma wine region. Here the ground is rich in limestone and galestro (a kind of clayey slate found locally), a soil type which imparts unique characteristics to the Sangiovese grapes.

This is the vineyard which gives rise to Rancia, a refined wine with a velvety texture that seduces right from the first mouthful. In the glass it appears a compact, ruby-red colour, and it's very complete on the nose: rich in fruit, floral, spicy, mineral and also balsamic aromas.

The most immediate impression indicates a wine that has primary aromas, of fulsome, juicy fruit, which shows the quality of the grape clusters, picked at their optimal point of ripeness (small berries containing loads of sweet red and black fruit, with pink notes). Yet straightaway, a delicious bouquet develops of spicy aromas deriving from its ageing for 18 months in new barrels, and concludes with that delightful mineral undertone, which confirms the exceptional nature of the ground the vines sink their roots into.

On the palate, Rancia is direct, fresh and has great balance, with an elegant texture and tasty, firm tannins which, cloaked in some gentle spiciness, guide us towards a lengthy and persistent finish.

Thanks to the tireless work done by four generations, the Paolo Saracco winery, founded by his great grandfather Luiggi in 1900, has become quite a reference point for Moscato lovers in search of a quality product impeccably made. The sweet wines which the winery produces, the Moscato d'Asti and the Moscato d'Autunno, figure on the wine lists of the world's most prestigious restaurants. The winery owns 46 hectares in Castigione Tinella (one of Italy's most popular vineyards); boasting lands with an excellent exposure and vines that have been cultivated over several decades.

Of a greenish colour with beautiful straw-like reflections, the Moscato by Paolo Saracco, a dyed in the wool wine perfectionist, has a fine and continuous effervescence which works like a dream. The bouquet, as always, is multi-faceted and elegant with aromas of orange blossoms and yellow fruit (from peach to loquat to gooseberry), herbs like sage and thyme, citrus scents. The taste is sweet and fresh, and unusually satisfying, rich in aromas and remarkably fragrant. The finish, masterfully and naturally aromatic, leans towards the vegetal and makes you want to sip it endlessly, over and over again, without a thought in your mind, thanks to the effect of its evanescence.
