About this selection...

With the holidays now over, February is the month of St. Valentine's Day. The cold weather still upon us is an invitation to search for warmth and warm flavours, a metaphorical blanket to envelop us towards the end of winter. Softness, in this season, is the ideal feature of a good glass of wine with friends or family. A gentle wine, warm, full-bodied but with a sweet touch, a wine for the last big winter dinners, but also in front of a fireplace.

Mild climates and winters that are far from stern are, in Italy, the ideal embrace for this type of wine. But the vines also play their part. Lashed by the warm winds of Salento, the Primitivo is the king: it's an early grape, but it manages to incorporate an long-lasting and velvety softness, of immense breadth and rigour. A grape that in just a few years has won over the all international consensus and which is among the most sought after in Italian enology.

What about the brilliant Moscato del Sud? Fantastic as passiti, they also produce exciting sensations in the dry vinified wines. Soft aromas and pleasant marine notes are thus the perfect choice for the most fanciful wine lover, who let themselves be carried away by the thought of the future summer. And then Tuscany, where softness is experimental, where the great classics of international wine, aged in small barrels by skilled hands, are magically transformed into champions of softness, ideal to satisfy even the most demanding palate and perfectionists.

This selection? Not one, but one hundred shades of softness!

Duemani Cifra 2016 (2 bottles)

Red. Duemani Costa Toscana, Italy Cabernet Franc

Bottle: £18.81 club members / £21.48 non-members

From the best clay and stony soils of the Tuscan coast, on which Duemani has begun one of the most forward-looking and experimental projects of the district, comes this very interesting expression of Cabernet Franc. A biodynamic wine, which spontaneously ferments in concrete and stays there to age, and is this extraordinary winery's style's calling card.

Ruby with some purple reflections, which is also a sign of the youth of the alberello vines, Cifra has a precise and unique nose, with hints of blueberry and Mediterranean scrub dotted with memories of the sea with its salt and iodine. The background, herbaceous and vegetal, also recalls juniper berries, undergrowth and dried mushroom. The territoriality of the Pisa Coast is also felt on the palate, and in the Cabernet Franc reveals Luca D'Attoma and Elena Celli's true workhorse by.

Big temperature fluctuations and sea breezes produce a full-bodies wine, decidedly prone to softness and fruit, which does not mean that it is lacking in interesting mineral and savoury elements. All in all, it's juicy and soft, with a sweet but balanced tannin, which leaves a very long peppery and jammy finish.

  • Alcohol content: 14,0%
  • Optimum serving temperature: Between 16ºC and 18ºC

Cantele Primitivo 2016 (2 bottles)

Red. Cantele Salento, Italy Primitivo

Bottle: £6.15 club members / £6.98 non-members

Cantele, a large family company established in 1979, is today a modern and dynamic winery. Located between Guagnano and Salice Salentino, it boasts 30 hectares of its own vineyard and a wide range of delights, dedicated to the enhancement of native vines in all their most convincing guises.

From these, the great classic of Salento definitely stands out: the Primitivo. Cultivated in espalier and alberello style between Torricella and San Pietro Vernotico, it is harvested at the end of August and macerates for no more than one week. The ageing process too is not aimed at emphasizing the natural concentration: 6 months of barrique is enough.

Ruby red with delicate but very elegant garnet, the Primitivo di Cantele, on the nose, releases mineral aromas that create an extremely fine nuance with morello cherry, sour cherry and plum. The aroma is also enriched with hints of flowers and spices, which lead to an aftertaste endowed with excellent intensity, breadth and complexity. On the palate, the tannins, which are not aggressive and silkily integrated, in parallel with its softness and characteristic warmth, confirm the finesse of this wine, which is, at the same time, vigorous and elegant, robust and refined.

  • Alcohol content: 13,5%
  • Optimum serving temperature: Between 16ºC and 18ºC

Miceli YRNM 2015 (2 bottles)

White. Miceli Pantelleria, Italy Moscato d'Alessandria

Bottle: £10.16 club members / £11.55 non-members

Miceli, one of the oldest and most classic wineries in Sicily, and definitely one of the first to aim for quality by abandoning the sale of bulk wines or blending wines, shows a different and original side to Pantelleria with the YRNM. YRNM is a Moscato d'Alessandria, or Zibibbo, from grapes which are slightly macerated and aged dry, produced on the island of Pantelleria, on classic volcanic soil lashed by the strong characteristic winds of the territory.

Straw yellow to golden, YRNM reveals a delicate aroma, with scents of linden tree and jasmine combined with the more full-bodied fruity hints of peach and melon, pineapple and white mulberry. After a while typical mineral aromas emerge, accompanied by wisps of aromatic herbs, from thyme to marjoram.

The palate is soothing and intriguing. Aromatic, warm, elegantly structured and gentle, it is pleasantly fresh, very soft and persistent, of considerable consistency and a great pseudo-caloric feeling. The aftertaste, sapid and well-rounded, takes you back to the mineral notes of the aroma, and at the same time reveals very fine sapidity.
