The region offering the finest and most intriguing Pinot Neros in Italy, Alto Adige is, this wine excluded, a substantially white territory. After all, an area such as Terlano and Valle Isarco has made international whites an actual range of indigenous grapes, which here are interpreted with a unique and original personality.
And it is not Gewürztraminer, a name which recalls the Alto Adige origins of Termeno. It is also the history of local Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay, Sauvignon. Wines that are different, of course, from the mineral verticality of our brothers from the other side of the Alps (from the Loire to Burgundy to Germany) to embrace a cheerful style, sometimes Mediterranean, which produces thin and broad aromaticity without forfeiting the satisfaction of a beautiful structure.

White. Tiefenbrunner Alto Adige, Italy Sauvignon
Bottle: £8.94 club members / £10.29 non-members
The Merus range, which interprets these grapes with fragrance and aromatic accessibility, finds in Sauvignon one of its own warhorses. Coming from various hillside vineyards around Cortaccia, Penone and Niclara, between 300 and 500 metres altitude, planted starting from about. twenty years ago, this Sauvignon benefits, in terms of delicacy and subtlety, from chalky gravelly soils on moraine sediments.
The result is a great typical Sauvignon, straw-coloured with greenish reflections that announce its youth and freshness in its taste. On the nose it is fragrant and seductive, with pleasant hints of nettle, elderberry flowers, sage and mint, which draw a characteristic vegetable framework but which is very elegant. The taste does not disappoint and is it consistent: it is tense, fresh, but at the same time aromatically enveloping and pleasantly persistent, with a structure aided by four months of rest on yeasts in steel.

White. Hofstätter Alto Adige, Italy Pinot Blanc
Bottle: £9.29 club members / £10.65 non-members
From light, marly soils, which are subject to rapid heating, the Pinot Bianco is one of the examples of how this impressive machine of quality adapts to the market with incredibly competitive prices. The Hofstätter Pinot Bianco is of a beautiful intense and shiny straw-yellow colour, which reverberates in a bouquet of fruit and white flowers. Delicate sensations, but refined and clean, which is confirmed in its perfect taste, which is surprisingly velvety and fragrant. Fruity and at the same time tense and full-bodied, it’s not particularly acidic and has an absolutely satisfying persistence.

White. Cantina Terlano Alto Adige, Italy Chardonnay
Bottle: £9.07 club members / £10.29 non-members
This Chardonnay is no exception. A pleasant and captivating white of a bright straw yellow colour with green reflections, whose colour will tend towards golden as it ages. The bouquet has intense aromas of exotic fruit, banana, quince, passion fruit, melon, followed by herbal notes of lemon balm. It conquer the palate with its perfect balance between fruity aromas of pear and mango and particularly sapid mineral notes. Good softness and beautiful persistence at the end, thanks largely to the months of aging on yeasts, confirm the picture of a spontaneous white but which is subtle, and can be aged due to its excellent structure.
