About this selection...

The most northern wine-growing region of Italy, Alto Adige has always naturally north-looking, towards the great and austere horizons of Central European wine. The characteristics of this magical area are simple: fully mountainous, Alto Adige is rich in calcareous soils, which produce fine and delicate wines, and ensures, in the best valleys, great temperature ranges for the most exposed vineyards, which thus produce wide-ranging and elegant grapes from the aroma perspective.

The region offering the finest and most intriguing Pinot Neros in Italy, Alto Adige is, this wine excluded, a substantially white territory. After all, an area such as Terlano and Valle Isarco has made international whites an actual range of indigenous grapes, which here are interpreted with a unique and original personality.

And it is not Gewürztraminer, a name which recalls the Alto Adige origins of Termeno. It is also the history of local Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay, Sauvignon. Wines that are different, of course, from the mineral verticality of our brothers from the other side of the Alps (from the Loire to Burgundy to Germany) to embrace a cheerful style, sometimes Mediterranean, which produces thin and broad aromaticity without forfeiting the satisfaction of a beautiful structure.

Tiefenbrunner Sauvignon Merus 2017 (2 bottles)

White. Tiefenbrunner Alto Adige, Italy Sauvignon

Bottle: £8.94 club members / £10.29 non-members

Tiefenbrunner, a winery founded in 1848, has always been committed to innovation strongly rooted in a traditional vineyard and winery context. This historic winery, today led by Christof, still focuses on territoriality and excellence, arranged on very extensive vineyards, which surrounds the characteristic castle of the estate, producing some interesting crus. Soil study and environmental sustainability have allowed Tiefenbrunner to churn out, in recent years, a wide and tasty series of selected and experimental wines, working on all international varieties, red and white, which are typical of Alto Adige.

The Merus range, which interprets these grapes with fragrance and aromatic accessibility, finds in Sauvignon one of its own warhorses. Coming from various hillside vineyards around Cortaccia, Penone and Niclara, between 300 and 500 metres altitude, planted starting from about. twenty years ago, this Sauvignon benefits, in terms of delicacy and subtlety, from chalky gravelly soils on moraine sediments.

The result is a great typical Sauvignon, straw-coloured with greenish reflections that announce its youth and freshness in its taste. On the nose it is fragrant and seductive, with pleasant hints of nettle, elderberry flowers, sage and mint, which draw a characteristic vegetable framework but which is very elegant. The taste does not disappoint and is it consistent: it is tense, fresh, but at the same time aromatically enveloping and pleasantly persistent, with a structure aided by four months of rest on yeasts in steel.

Hofstatter Pinot Bianco 2017 (2 bottles)

White. Hofstätter Alto Adige, Italy Pinot Blanc

Bottle: £9.29 club members / £10.65 non-members

Founded in 1907 by Josef Hofstätter, the winery that still bears the name of the patriarch is one of the pinnacles of Alto Adige wine, almost a legend, a synonym of the wine itself in the region. Located in Termeno, among the epicentres of South Tyrolean oenology, Hofstätter has always combined significant numbers (55 hectares for about 800,000 bottles annually) and uncompromising quality. Martin, the great-grandson of the founder who is today at the helm of the Winery, is indeed holding the baton of this tradition, which, back in the day (and in any case the first in the region), separately vinifies very small and sometimes contiguous plots, producing genuine crus of the territory. A Burgundy-inspired philosophy which, located in the beautiful winery in the centre of Termeno in an historic sixteenth-century building, its ideal fruition.

From light, marly soils, which are subject to rapid heating, the Pinot Bianco is one of the examples of how this impressive machine of quality adapts to the market with incredibly competitive prices. The Hofstätter Pinot Bianco is of a beautiful intense and shiny straw-yellow colour, which reverberates in a bouquet of fruit and white flowers. Delicate sensations, but refined and clean, which is confirmed in its perfect taste, which is surprisingly velvety and fragrant. Fruity and at the same time tense and full-bodied, it’s not particularly acidic and has an absolutely satisfying persistence.

Terlano Chardonnay 2017 (2 bottles)

White. Cantina Terlano Alto Adige, Italy Chardonnay

Bottle: £9.07 club members / £10.29 non-members

Longevity, complexity and character are the main qualities that distinguish Terlano wines. This winery that needs no introduction operates, even in the considerable extension of the vineyard, on soils with a very high mineral content, which produce positive stabilising effects and imbibe the wines with an impressive freshness and pedigree throughout the course of the their life. Cantina Terlano has a long tradition in creating durable wines, dating back to 1900. This tradition is seen today in the whole range: including the most ready-to-drink wines, with their excellent affordability, are startling in their emotional effect at a distance of years from the harvest.

This Chardonnay is no exception. A pleasant and captivating white of a bright straw yellow colour with green reflections, whose colour will tend towards golden as it ages. The bouquet has intense aromas of exotic fruit, banana, quince, passion fruit, melon, followed by herbal notes of lemon balm. It conquer the palate with its perfect balance between fruity aromas of pear and mango and particularly sapid mineral notes. Good softness and beautiful persistence at the end, thanks largely to the months of aging on yeasts, confirm the picture of a spontaneous white but which is subtle, and can be aged due to its excellent structure.
