About this selection...

One says 3,000,000 bottles and one thinks of the wine industry. Marcello Zaccagnini's is instead eclectic and dynamic, very sensitive to the needs of the market, of course, but deeply rooted in love for the territory like few others. As one of the best represented Italian wineries in the world, Zaccagnini displays a virtuous union between entrepreneurial vision and vineyard and cellar expertise. In the countryside of Casauria, the Zaccagnini's have their roots, and here they oversee 300 hectares in which the indigenous Abruzzese grapes stand out, with Montepulciano at the top.

Montepulciano is in fact the symbol of the winery. Energetic and exuberant, Marcello has made it one of the monuments of national enology, rejuvenating the image of rustic and inelegant vines to deliver a new identity, stylish with a complex palate. A winery littered with internationally renowned works of art gives the idea of a winery with big numbers but with deep cultural significance.

The Tralcetto, even in the Cerasuolo version, comes from the idea of giving the taster a concrete piece of work in the vineyard. An original idea, which has become a symbol of the winery. But Tralcetto is not only marketing. There is also the antechamber of a great Montepulciano, balanced and with a sweet fruit flavour, which is in Chronicon, relaxed, enveloping and spicy, and is completed in San Clemente, powerful, rich and concentrated. Is it summer? Chilled just a little, a Tralcetto will amaze you. Getting ready for winter? This San Clemente knows how to wait.

Zaccagnini Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Tralcetto 2016 (2 bottles)

Red. Zaccagnini Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Italy Montepulciano

Bottle: £5.77 club members / £6.50 non-members

Perhaps some will turn their noses up at the symbolic and sly packaging, but Tralcetto is and remains one of the symbols of Italian wine. Even the most skeptical must agree that this wine is not just presentation, but also substance. First of all, the idea of rolling a small vine around the neck of the bottle is not a superficial operation. On the contrary, it bears witness to the lasting bond between this great winery and its land, between its entrepreneurial futurism and the solid approach to working in the vineyard.

If the bottle is the cover that announces a story by attracting the reader lost among the shelves, the wine is, in this case, a very compelling story. Tralcetto tells the story, without hypocrisy and superficial flourishes, the true essence of Montepulciano, with its strengths and its limits. A story that has its roots in Abruzzo nomadism and work in trabocchi (fishing machines), and that unites, in a unique and lively civilization of proud peasants and fishermen, the healthy good taste of Abruzzo. Grapes which are too young and a bit thorny? Perhaps these are the limits of Montepulciano that Tralcetto narrates with passion. But try them with a real arrosticino or with a nice pecorino: those limits will change their appearance and will go on to expand the ranks of the merits of this wine.

Tralcetto is a wine of a territorial character, of an intense ruby red colour with violet reflections. The bouquet reveals an intense and characteristic aroma with all the primary aromas of the vine: notes of jam of small red fruit, bitter almond, spices, combined with ethereal sensations. The taste is full and well structured, tannic and warm, soft and with a great taste-olfactory persistence. Strong body, sometimes a bit rough and lively, but well balanced by the perfect tannic qualities and the wood for aging. It is excellent accompanied with elaborate meat dishes, pasta with ragù and medium-aged cheeses.

Zaccagnini Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Chronicon 2014 (2 bottles)

Red. Zaccagnini Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Italy Montepulciano

Bottle: £7.96 club members / £9.05 non-members

"Chronicon" evokes time and history. This pure Montepulciano d'Abruzzo has its roots in the history of this territory and is headed for the future guaranteeing the taster excellent longevity. Aged in steel with a few steps in used wood (which can be up to a year of barrique), Chronicon is the perfect combination between the lively freshness of a Tralcetto and the explosive structure of a San Clemente. It is sold, however, three years after the harvest, and can easily age for over five years.

Chronicon is an intense and pleasant ruby-red wine with garnet reflections. The bouquet reveals an intense, characteristic, typical aroma of the vine, with notes of fresh and jammy red fruit, sweet spices, a little liquorice and vanilla. On the palate it expresses full body and robustness, with a tannic component finely balanced with the taste of wood, harmonious with ample fruity and floral notes. Very versatile during meals, it goes well with hearty dishes such as game pies, braised meats and elaborate meat dishes, but also arrosticini, grilled meat and roast chicken. It’s also great with pizza and kebabs.

Zaccagnini Montepulciano Riserva San Clemente 2013 (2 bottles)

Red. Zaccagnini Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Italy Montepulciano

Bottle: £18.19 club members / £20.68 non-members

San Clemente is Zaccagnini’s Reserve Montepulciano, a prestigious wine that boasts the additional description of Terre di Casauria, one of the most prestigious areas for cultivating this vine. San Clemente is a wine that reveals all the best qualities of Montepulciano, persuasive and complete both in youth and over the years.

Maceration takes place in oak vats, and this aspect in itself gives an idea of the decisive and complex character of the final product. Vivid ruby in colour, intense and deep, San Clemente has a fruity but deep aroma, with notes of blackberry, plum jam and cherry in spirit. They are followed by even more complex sensations, toasted, with hints of tobacco and cocoa, and spicy, with flavours of pepper and cinnamon. There is no shortage of memories of liquorice and leather at the end, guaranteeing the evolutionary potential of this bouquet.

The aging in wood continues for at least 9 months, and then San Clemente is stabilised in steel and in bottles for another 20. This wine has potential that easily exceeds the decade, yet it has a tense and dynamic flavour, that the strength balances with masterful harmony. The tannin and freshness blend well until the long final progression, which enhances the enveloping and robust body while never tiring the drinker.
